Cleaning And Caring For Your Jewelry
All precious metals tarnish. Sterling Silver tarneshes from the interaction of silver and sulfides in the air. The higher the humidity and/or air pollution, the higher the sulfide level. The tarnish will first take on a gold color hue and eventually the piece of jewelry will turn black. This is a natural process. Here are some methods to clean your jewelry along with some precautions.
1. Soak your gold or silver jewelry for about 15 minutes in a solution of two cups of warm water and a couple of drops of a mild dishwashing liquid or a teaspoon of automatic dishwashing liquid. After soaking, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently scrub the piece. Rinse well with warm water and dry with a soft lint-free cloth. This method will not harm gemstones or metals.
2. Denture cleaner is one of the best jewelry cleaners in the world! Simply break a tablet into pieces (save the unused pieces for later cleanings), add enough warm water to cover the piece or pieces of jewelry you are cleaning and let the tablet do the work! You can soak your jewelry up to 30 minutes after which you rinse the piece with warm water and dry with a soft lint-free cloth. This method is great for metals and gemstones. Not only will your jewelry sparkle, but one box of denture cleaning tablets will last you for years.
3. You can polish your sterling silver by rubbing or buffing it with a soft lint-free cloth. Using a chemically treated cloth or using a cloth with a dab of polishing paste will make the job easier and faster. Do not use these tarnish removers near gemstones unless you are sure of their constitution!
4. Silver or Gold dips are fast and easy but should be used as last resort. When using these dips, dip the piece quickly in and out of the dip and immediately rinse it very well in clean warm water, dry and buff with a soft lint-free cloth. Buffing with a cloth brings out more of the shine and helps remove any dip residue left on the piece. It is better to do an in-and-out dip, rinse and dry and then repeat the method than to leave the piece in the solution for a period of time. If the piece is left in too long or not rinsed well, a white residue will be left on the piece when it dries and this residue is difficult to rub off. These dips can alter the color or take the polish off many gemstones, so use dips with caution.
Cautions!
1. Do NOT use toothpaste to polish your jewelry as it is an abrasive!
2. Do NOT use an ultrasonic cleaning device as the ultrasonic waves can break some gemstones or can loosen stones in their settings which can cause them to fall out later.
3. Do NOT use tarnish removers on or near stones until you are sure of their constitution.
4. Wood, especially oak, contains an acid that will mar the surface of silver so never leave silver jewelry lying against bare wood. Paper and cardboard will have the same effect since they are wood pulp products, so avoid storing silver jewelry in envelopes or small cardboard boxes.
5. Remember when using dips, many dips will alter the color and/or take the polish off many gemstones. Also, if not rinsed properly, the dip will leave a white residue on the silver or gold that is difficult to rub or buff off.
6. Avoid using a tarnish shield or similar lacquer shield. These shields will keep the jewelry shiny until the shield wears off but the jewelry piece does not age well. In spots where the lacquer has lossened but has not worn off, the jewelry will tarnish and you won't be able to buff it. Also, if you use a dip, the dip will get under the loosened piece of lacquer and leave a white residue giving the jewelry an ugly look.
If you follow these methods and remember the cautions, not only will your jewelry "sparkle", but it will last you a lifetime!
