October Birthstones

"Opal and Tourmaline"

"Opal"

The name opal derives from the Sanskrit upala, meaning precious stone", and then the Greek word Opallos, meaning "to see a change of color."
Opal is the birthstone for the month of October and the gemstone for the 14th wedding anniversary.
Opals range a 5.5 to 6.0 on the Mohs scales of hardness. Opals always contain water and can become brittle if stored too dry or overexposed to heat.
Opal comes in many background colors including white, peach, black, dark blue, dark green and gray; all having flashes of many colors.
Ninety-five percent of fine opals come from Australia. Opals are also found in U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Ethiopia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Indonesia, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua
Legends and Myths: According to the Australian aborigines, the creator came down to Earth on a rainbow to bring the message of peace to all the humans. At the very spot, where his foot touched the ground, the stones became alive and started sparkling in all the colors of the rainbow, thus, opals were born. Blonde women in the middle ages wore opals believing they would prevent their hair from fading, darkening or turning gray. It was also believed to turn a person invisible whenever he wished. It has been said that wearing Opal if it is not your gemstone will bring bad luck to the wearer. This opal myth dates back to 1829 when Sir Walter Scott published Anne of Gerstein. In this book the main character dies and her death is attributed to the wearing of opal. Before the release of this book, the multicolored opal was considered to be a gemstone of good luck, beauty and fascination.

Tourmaline often has two or more colors ranging from red to green and blue to yellow.
Tourmaline can be found in Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA.
