"Emerald"

Emerald takes its name from the Greek root "smaragdos" which means "green stone." Emeralds have the most beautiful, intense and radiant green that can be imagined. Because green is a symbol of springtime which comes round again and again, the emerald is the symbol of rebirth.

Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May and the anniversary gemstone for the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.

Emeralds range from 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. Although they are a tough gem, they are prone to cracks. Most emeralds undergo some form of treatment; oils and epoxy resins are often used to fill-in surface cracks and improve the gem's transparency.

Colombia and Brazil are considered the finest locations to uncover these beautiful beryls. They can also be found in India, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Russia.

Legends and Myths:

In ancient Egypt, emeralds were buried with mummies. The oldest known emeralds come from the infamous "Cleopatra Mines" . One of the world's largest emerald is the 'Mogul Emerald'. This emerald dates back to 1695, weighs 217.80 carats, and is about 10cm tall. One side of it is inscribed with prayer texts, and the other side engraved with magnificent floral ornaments. Auctioned by Christie's of London, this legendary emerald was sold to an unidentified buyer for 2.2m US Dollars on September 28th 2001
