"Aquamarine"
The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea.
Aquamarine is the birthstone for the month of March and the gemstone for the 19th wedding anniversary.
Aquamarine ranges 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family. Aquamarine is usually light in tone with tansparent color ranging from greenish blue to blue-green. The larger the stone; the more intense the color. Aquamarine really does capture the lucid blue of the oceans.
Aquamarine is mainly found in Brazil, Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar and Ukraine.
Legends and Myths: People in the Middle Ages thought that aquamarine could magically overcome the effects of poison. Ancient sailors traveled with aquamarine crystals, believing that it would protect them, ensure a safe voyage, and guarantee a safe return. The sailors often slept with the stones under their pillow to ensure sound sleep. It was also thought to prevent seasickness. They also believed the mermaid's fish-like lower body was made of aquamarine.
Healing Properties: Arouses feelings of sympathy, trust, harmony and friendship. Calms. Aides with blood disorders.
