June Birthstones

"Pearl, Alexandrite, & Moonstone"

"Pearl"

One of June's birthstones is the pearl. The pearls is also the gemstone for the 3rd and 30th wedding anniversaries.
The pearl is a unique gem that's organic in origin. The pearl is the only gem that comes from living sea creatures such as oysters and clams. There are two kinds of pearls, natural and cultured. A natural pearl is formed when a small irritant, like a piece of sand, gets trapped inside the mollusk's soft tissue. This causes the animal to secret nacre, a substance known as "mother of pearl", which builds up, layer by layer, to produce a smooth, hardened pearl. Cultured pearls are made when an irritant is purposely introduced to the mollusk to facilitate pearl production. Cultured pearls are more widely used in jewelry today than the natural pearl. Pearls require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty.
Pearls can be found all over the world including Mexico, Indonesia, Bavaria, the United States, Japan and Sri Lanka
Legends and Myths: In ancient times, the Persians, Hindus and Romans wore this gem to display their wealth and status. Roman women wore pearls while they slept to remind them how rich they were. In India, the people believed that pearls were dewdrops from heaven that fell into the ocean and were caught by the ocean's shellfish during the first rays of the rising sun. Soldiers and warriors placed pearls on their swords to symbolize the tears and sorrow that the weapon brings.
Healing Properties: A stone of sincerity, brings truth to situations and loyalty to a cause. It has been used to inhibit boisterous behavior. Used for endurance and emotional stability. Inspires purity, honesty, innocence, integrity, concentration, focus, meditation, serenity, tranquility and wisdom. Helps us get in touch with the simple honest things in live. "Alexandrite"

Alexandrite is another birthstone for the month of June.
Alexandrite is named after the Russian tsar Alexander II (1818-1881). The very first alexandrite crystals were discovered in April 1834 in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in the Urals on the day the future tsar came of age.
Alexandrite ranges and 8.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Alexandrite is a rare and scarce gemstone and hardly ever used in modern jewelry. This stone has a surprising ability to change its color from green or bluish-green in daylight to a soft shade of red, purplish-red or raspberry red in artificial light.
Alexandrite has been found mainly in Russia but also in Brazil, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, India, Burma, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
Legends and Myths: It is considered a stone of very good omen.
Healing Properties: Strengthens the wearer's intuition, aids creativity and inspires the imagination.

In the trade, this shimmering phenomenon is known as adularescence.
