February Birthstone

"Amethyst"

The word amethyst is derived from the Greek word "amethystos", meaning not intoxicated. In ancient Greece, the gemstone was associated with the god of wine, and it was common practice to serve this beverage from Amethyst goblets in the belief that this would prevent overindulgence.
Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February and the traditional anniversary gemstone for the sixth of marriage.
Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It is the purple variety of quartz and would be very expensive if not for its availability. Amethyst's primary hues range from a light slightly-pinkish violet to a deep grape purple. Amethyst may exhibit one or both secondary hues, red and/or blue. The ideal grade and most prized color is an intense violet with red flashes and is called "Deep Siberian" which has a primary purple hue of around 75 to 80 percent, 15 to 20 percent blue and (depending on the light source) red secondary hues. Amethyst can lighten if exposed to strong sunlight for a long time.
Purple has always been the color of royalty, therefore, amethysts were used in the ornaments in the British Crown Jewels and in the adornments of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Amethysts have been found in ruins dating as far back as the ninth century, adorning royal jewelry and crowns.
Amethysts are mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Zambia, Australia and in the mountains of Russia. They have also been mined in Mexico, Arizona, Maine, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Montana and Colorado.
Legends and Myths: Amethysts was used as medieval medications to sharpen the mind and protect the wearer from sorcery. The Greeks believed amethyst prevented the wearer from intoxication, they would serve the wine in amethyst goblets.
Healing Properties: Considered a stabilizing force for those struggling to overcome addictive behaviors. Helps to bring on pleasant dreams because amethyst allows you to "channel" positive universal energy. Amethyst has a relieving effect on stress, grief, depression, emotional despair and ineffective communication, it creates calmness and tranquility. Amethyst is used to increase intuition and psychic development and is used to aide the third eye in the transition from a normal state of consciousness to a deeper awareness.
