"Tanzanite, Zircon and Turquoise"

"Tanzanite"

Tanzanite is named after the East African state of Tanzania.

Tanzanite is the birthstone for the month of December and the gemstone for the 24th wedding anniversary.

Tanzanite ranges a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Tanzanite was discovered in 1967. It has a rich violet blue color and ranges from ultramarine blue to light violet-blue. The most valued color is a blue surrounded by a delicate hint of purple. The first tanzanites were offered to the New York jewelry company "Tiffany's" a short time after their discovery. Since the gemmologically correct name "blue zoisite" was felt to be too close to the English word "suicide", Tiffany's recommended renaming the gemstone. Tiffany's proposed the name 'tanzanite', after the place where the stone had been found.

There is only one place Tanzanite can be found worldwide and that is in Tanzania.

"Zircon"

Zircon is derived from the Arabic words zar and gun, meaning gold and color.

Zircon is the birthstone for the month of December and the alternate gemstone for the 4th wedding anniversary.

Zircon ranges a 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Zircon has a wide range of colors: blue, yellow, orange, brown, green, colorless, and red. Colorless zircon has been used for years to imitate diamonds.

Zircon can be found in the Chanthaburi area of Thailand, the Palin area of Cambodia, and the southern part of Vietnam.

Legends and Myths:

Believed to have the power to relieve pain, wet the appetite, protect travelers from disease and injury, to ensure a warm welcome, and to prevent nightmares creating a tranquil sleep.

Healing Properties:

Promotes development of higher mind and prophecy and reduces melancholia. In healing, used for lungs, liver, brain, venereal diseases and skin problems.

"Turquoise"

The name turquoise comes from the French expression Pierre tourques or Turkish stone; turkish stone because the trade route that brought turquoise to Europe came by way of Turkey.

Turquoise is the birthstone for the month of December and the gemstone for the 11th Wedding Anniversary.

Turquoise ranges a 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Turquoise color ranges from sky blue, which is the most desirable, to blue green and apple green. Turquoise should be protected from cosmetics, heat and bright light.

Turquoise can be found in Iran, Sinai, Southwest United States, China, Tibet, Afghanistan, Australia and Chile.

Legends and Myths:

The Native Americans carved the stone in animal shapes representing different divinities. They would leave these shapes on burial sites to guard the dead. They also believe that turquoise can ward off illness. Warriors attached turquoise to their bows and arrows to ensure that their shots hit the desired target.
