Birthstones are gemstones that are associated with each month of the year.
Birthstones were first associated with the Zodiac and then, as time passed, became associated with the months of the year. A Birthstone is considered lucky for its particular month and its healing powers are heightened during that month.
Over the centuries, different gemstones have been set aside as birthstones. In 1912, the American National Retail Jewelers' Association decided on a list of birthstones. They would add gemstones or change the list according to what was more financially beneficial to the jewelry industry . In 1938, the American Gem Society adopted a list of birthstones.
